Coffee arrived in Papua New Guinea in the early 1900s, introduced by German and British merchants to supply the Australian market. Much of the country’s coffee still traces its lineage back to Jamaican Blue Mountain, and today it is grown primarily in small community “gardens”—shared plots cultivated by families and neighbors rather than large estates. These gardens form the backbone of PNG’s coffee sector, producing fruit that is sold as cherry to local washing and aggregation stations. This lot comes from the Eastern Highlands, where smallholders grow coffee on their patios and homestead plots before delivering ripe cherry to a nearby wet mill for sorting, pulping, fermentation, and drying. PNG coffees often serve as excellent Brazilian or Colombian replacements, offering a similarly dependable structure but with a bit more lift, fruit character, and savory complexity. In the cup, this PNG B displays the region’s most recognizable traits: caramel and fruit‑leather aromatics, a medium‑full, buoyant body, and a flavor profile that moves from savory depth into prune‑like sweetness. The finish carries a subtle spicy edge that never overwhelms the underlying vanilla‑cola clarity. It’s a versatile, quietly expressive washed PNG—balanced, structured, and ideal for roasters seeking a coffee that “tastes like coffee” while still offering nuance.
