Our Double Vaughn Dutch regional select is named in honor of Vaughn Neblock, uncle to the Hanson brothers and one of the most influential figures in our company’s early history. Vaughn began his coffee career with Folgers Coffee Company in Kansas City in 1945, at just 18 years old. By 1958 he had risen to head green buyer, and over the decades he trained many early specialty‑coffee pioneers—including the Hansons—in the discipline of cupping and quality evaluation. His lifelong affection for Sumatran coffees made this regional select a natural tribute. Sumatra has long carried the stereotype of being dirty, earthy, or only suited for dark roasts, but modern smallholder processing has rewritten that narrative. Today’s best wet‑hulled coffees can be surprisingly clean, sweet, and expressive—especially when roasted with a lighter hand. If you’re willing to experiment, this lot rewards curiosity with a profile that is buttery, spiced, and fruit‑forward in ways that defy old expectations. We cup offers for this coffee year‑round to ensure it remains consistently available. It performs beautifully as a cold‑brew base, adds depth and sweetness as an espresso component, and stands confidently on its own as a distinctive single origin. In the cup, expect nutmeg, licorice, Hostess‑cupcake, and caramel aromatics, followed by flavors of brûléed fruit and buttery richness. The wet‑hulled structure brings a plush, rounded body with a lingering, gently spiced finish—elevated classic Sumatra.
