This coffee hails from Dimtu City in the Guji zone of Hambela Wamena in Ethiopia. This year it was produced by 282 farmers and their families, all belonging to Dimtu Washing Station, which is managed by KANYA coffee. These 282 are a significant jump from last year’s 205 producing families. KANYA coffee also runs their own processing facilities in Addis Ababa, guaranteeing traceability from the farmers at the washing station all the way to export. The farmers are paid anywhere from 5 to 10% above the daily market price for their cherries and the washing station takes meticulous care in its processing of each days’ purchases. In addition, KANYA regularly supports the farmers they work with in the form of contributions to schools, medical facilities and infrastructure programs throughout the Guji region. Due to a number of factors Ethiopian coffees have evolved away from the much reminisced intense blueberry bombs of previous decades, so we were pleasantly surprised by a return to form for the fruitiness of this coffee on the cupping table and knew we wanted it for our customers. Its syrupy body carries through even when cold and it deserves a place in any roaster’s roster of African coffees.
