Guatemala - Red El Scorpion - Finca Las Victorias - Gustavo Batres

Gustavo Batres inherited what became Finca Las Victorias from his father. It has been planted with coffee since his grandfather’s days, going back 85 years. The 6 hectare farm is divided into 6 lots, each with a distinct variety planted and cared for by hand. They are shaded by the abundance of cuje, gravileo, banana, pine, oak, cypress and avocado trees and watered by 3 different water sources on the farm. Las Victorias is a multifaceted production unit, currently featuring a small herd of grazing cattle for fattening, small areas dedicated to growing watercress (Nasturtium officinale), and modest plots for corn and bean cultivation for personal consumption. His fertilization program on the farm includes the use of hose manure compost, worm compost and some chemical fertilizers.  Gustavo employs 4 full time workers who live on-site and during harvest season up to 15 families come to participate. PArt of the impetus to join UCCAFE was to add value to his crop and showcase the hard work and dedication he and his employees put in to the coffee year in and year out.
